Character: Will Graham | Youngblood Starting Court: Black AU Age: Turned at human age 37. Has been a vampire for 43 years AU History:
As far as Will can remember he grew up in a single parent household with just his father, his mother left when he was a baby. He has always had an affinity for animals, particularly dogs, and been hopelessly awkward around people. This is due to the nature of his pure empathy, which often caused him to unconsciously adopt the mannerisms and characteristics of the people around him. Between his awkward social skills, his relatively poor upbringing, and his lack of a mother he was always seen and treated as an outsider.
Despite often being pushed to the outskirts of society, Will has a genuine heart and grew up with a drive to be a voice for the voiceless. This was expressed in his pursuit of a career with the local sheriffs’ department, and forever collecting stray dogs.
Though he had a genuine knack for being able to solve crimes, particularly homicides, his resistance to using his truncheon to subdue violent criminals became a source of contention within the department. Particularly with people who were partnered with him and concerned that his 'understanding' for the criminals would cause him to hesitate at a crucial moment and risk someone getting hurt. There were also whispers and rumors that Will didn't want to risk killing because he might like it too much.
In a mutually agreed upon decision Will left the local sheriffs’ department, and applied to work for a network of hunters, which were loosely coordinated across the various regions. He was denied an active field role, but was brought on board as an instructor, often traveling between different lands to help train novice hunters. Though he was not a vampire, at this time, he had a wide range of experience with the various courts (in so much as a human could have experience in the world of vampires) and was an instructor of some renown. This would be when his path initially crossed with his Maker.
Though his mind was considered too fragile for consistent field work, Will was occasionally tapped to help hunt down and stop some of the more vicious monsters. He did not enjoy this because it meant he had to crawl inside the psyches of some vicious killers and they often clung on, even when he helped put them down. He was a good hunter and in order to keep leveraging his talents, his immediate supervisor had the bright idea to partner Will with a high ranking vampire. This was intended to help provide Will more access into the courts, while also providing him a staid partner to keep him steady.
Will's supervisor did this in good faith. Will's Maker had originally been a member of the Gold Court and on the Council, someone who engendered faith and trust. What was not as widely known was that the vampire had eventually renounced his Gold Court affiliation, and his place on the Council, in order to embrace the Black Court. On the surface he spun some high brow tale to explain the reason he changed, but there were whispers about the true reasons, some saying he did it simply because the pain of the transformation amused him.
The connection between Will and his Maker was immediate, electric and like pouring gasoline on a smoldering fire. They brought out the best of the worst in each other, and Will's maker became obsessed with the darkness he could sense in the unstable human. Their relationship was never healthy, and an argument could be made that Will's Maker overstepped himself when he brought Will over to being a vampire. But Will has never expressed regret for his change.
As his Maker had completed his transformation to Black Court before he brought Will over, Will has always been Black Court. As a novice and in the first twenty years as a Youngblood, this suited Will fine as he -encouraged by his Maker- embraced his dark hunter instincts. Between them, Will and his Maker went on a killing spree that is still whispered about culminating in a vicious psychological brinksmanship when Will turned against his Maker. The core of Will's psyche, that desperate desire to be a voice for those who have no voice, eventually asserting itself and causing the Youngblood to seek an end to the cycle between himself and his Maker.
Ultimately Will pursued the high stakes gamble that was killing his own Maker, driven to the desperate act by the desire to end his own capacity for the atrocities they were committing. Will was prepared not to survive the near impossible act of destroying his own blood, which is perhaps why he was able to commit to the act with enough strength of will that he managed to destroy his Maker and survive. Physically at least.
In a rare show of mercy, the weakened and traumatized youngblood was not destroyed for the swath of destruction he and his Maker had left in their wake. Instead for the next twelve years Will was effectively institutionalized until he recovered enough to be able to display genuine remorse for his actions and a desire not to continue to lead that sort of life. Will's remorse and desire not to slide down that slippery slope is genuine, though the monster who relishes hunting and delivering righteous justice is still there under the surface.
For the past ten years Will has been assigned to Castle Courtsheart as an instructor. He is kept away from any sort of law enforcement, be it as an instructor or in the field. For the most part he keeps his head down, focuses on his classes and does his best to rein in the monster inside.
General Personality: Will's AU personality is pretty much in line with his Season One personality in canon. He is reserved, withdrawn and twitchy doing his utmost to keep his head down and his nose clean. He is not unlike a wounded animal who wants nothing more than to find a quiet hole in which to lick at his injuries.
He is carrying the weight of guilt and remorse for what he did during the years he and his Maker were playing their games; both together and against one another. This mostly expresses itself through his desire to steer young, starry eyed novices away from the Black Court and to keep people at a safe distance from Will himself.
When his monster comes more to the surface, AU Will is very much the man we see in Season Three of canon. He is confident, ruthless and vengeful. His empathy is weaponized, and he is a cold blooded killer towards anyone he believes deserving of his righteous violence. He can be charming, engaging and tends to carry himself with a great deal of gravitas; the wounded animal is replaced by a sophisticated predator.
Pre-existing & Desired CR
Upcoming Plans: Will doesn't like any of you people. He is keeping his head down and teaching his classes and in his off hours he can be found out in the forest trying to befriend the wolves. Pre-existing CR: Most of the youngbloods in the castle either know Will or at least know of his history. He's still in the kicked puppy phase of his recovery from what happened with his Maker, and while he doesn't have close friends, he flits in and out of social situations as the mood takes him. Desired CR: Friends! Let's start with genuine friendly connections and work our way from there.
